Chemistry is the scientific study of matter and the changes it undergoes. The atom is considered the basic functional unit of matter. Understanding the classification of matter is foundational for all topics in general chemistry.

  • Matter: Anything that occupies space and has mass.

  • Matter can be classified into three main types based on composition and properties:

    • Element: The simplest type of matter, composed of only one kind of atom. Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.

    • Compound: Matter composed of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded together. Compounds have properties distinct from their constituent elements.

    • Mixture: Matter composed of elements and/or compounds that are physically mixed together, not chemically bonded. Mixtures can be separated by physical means.

Classification of Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures

Matter can be further classified based on its composition as either a pure substance or a mixture:

  • Pure Substance: Has a constant composition and distinct chemical properties. Includes elements and compounds.

  • Mixture: Has a variable composition and can be separated into its components by physical methods. Includes homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.

Types of Mixtures

  • Homogeneous Mixture (Solution): Uniform composition throughout. Example: salt water.

  • Heterogeneous Mixture: Non-uniform composition; different parts can be seen. Example: sand in water.

  2. Molecule: A group of two or more atoms bonded together.

  3. Physical Change: A change that does not alter the chemical composition of a substance (e.g., melting, boiling).

  4. Chemical Change: A change that alters the chemical composition, resulting in new substances (e.g., rusting, combustion).
