Demand-pull inflation occurs when the overall demand for goods and services in an economy increases faster than the supply can keep up. This situation is often described as "too much spending chasing too few goods." As demand rises, the demand curve shifts to the right, but if supply remains constant, producers cannot increase output to meet the higher demand. This imbalance causes prices to rise, leading to inflation. In a supply and demand graph, the equilibrium price increases while the quantity supplied stays the same, illustrating how demand "pulls" prices upward without an increase in production.

Cost-push inflation happens when the costs of production for firms increase, causing a decrease in the overall supply of goods and services. Unlike demand-pull inflation, where demand increases, cost-push inflation is driven by rising input costs such as wages or raw materials. This increase in production costs reduces supply, shifting the supply curve to the left. With demand held constant, the reduced supply leads to higher prices and lower quantities available in the market. Essentially, cost-push inflation is when the "cost" pushes prices up, whereas demand-pull inflation is when demand "pulls" prices up.

During demand-pull inflation, the demand curve shifts to the right due to increased consumer spending. Ideally, this would increase both the equilibrium price and quantity. This reduction in supply, with demand held constant, leads to higher prices, which is the essence of cost-push inflation. Supply shocks are a key factor in triggering cost-push inflation by pushing prices upward through increased production costs.
