  • Shell

A principal energy level in an atom, designated by a number (n), indicating the general region where electrons are likely found.
  • Subshell

A division within a shell, represented by a letter, specifying a set of orbitals with similar energy.
  • Sublevel

Another term for a division within a shell, each associated with a specific letter and energy.
  • Principal Quantum Number

A value (n) that labels the main energy level or shell of an atom, increasing with distance from the nucleus.
  • s Subshell

The lowest-energy division within any shell, always present, and represented by the letter s.
  • p Subshell

A division within shells starting from n=2, represented by the letter p, with higher energy than s.
  • d Subshell

A division present in shells n=3 and above, represented by the letter d, with energy higher than s and p.
  • f Subshell

A division present in shells n=4 and above, represented by the letter f, with the highest energy among the four.
  • Energy Level

A region around the nucleus where electrons are likely to be found, corresponding to a shell.
  • Variable Letter

A symbol (s, p, d, f) used to denote the type of subshell within a shell.
  • n Value

A number indicating the shell or principal energy level, determining the possible subshells present.
  • Atomic Structure

The arrangement of shells and subshells that determines electron distribution in an atom.
